Musical Director

John Flack

John was born in Essex and began playing the trombone at the age of 9. After leaving school he studied at the Royal College of Music.

For three seasons, John was principal trombone in the opera orchestra of the International Music Festival instigated by Hans Werner Henze in Montepulciano in Italy. During this time John was privileged to play under the baton of Ricardo Chai and Giuseppe Sinopoli. It was at this time that John gained his love of musical theatre and opera, having performed many shows in and around London including the popular Raymond Gubbay themed series of concerts, where John met his wife Sue singing with the English Concert Singers.

In 1980 he joined the Band of H.M. Coldstream Guards as principal trombone. As well at State and ceremonial duties in and around London, he has been on concert tours to America, Japan, Australia and Hong Kong, playing in many prestigious venues across the world including Madison Square Garden, Sydney Opera House, most major UK concert halls and Buckingham Palace.

When he left the Army he focused on a career in teaching, working for Suffolk County Music Service as Assistant Head of Brass and running the Northern Area Music Centre in Lowestoft. In his spare time, he enjoys playing in local bands and orchestras including the RAF Band, Honington, Royal British Legion Band, Leiston and plays regularly with the Kingfisher Sinfonia. In 2015 he became the Musical Director of the Waveney Concert Band and really enjoys working with and developing and extending the bands repetoire.
